Harry Potter alumni Tom Felton to star in new Tower of London attraction The Gunpowder Plot

Guy Fawkes is coming back to London soon. This is the news you never thought you needed!

More specifically, from the 20th of May, the Tower of London will host one of the most jaw-dropping immersive theatre experiences featuring Tom Felton, the famous and beloved actor. He played the infamous Draco Malfoy in the widely acclaimed and timeless movie adaptations of Harry Potter. If you’ve se n Harry Potter – and it is highly likely you have seen at least one of the eight films – then you must surely know who Tom Felton is and can instantly imagine him bringing Guy Fawkes to life. Such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is not to be missed!

The extremely talented actor will be featured and will be leading an excellent cast of more than 50 other actors in this new and utterly revolutionising adaptation of Guy Fawkes’ story, The Gunpowder Plot. Alongside him, you will have the chance to see other talented and widely-known actors such as award-nominated actress Michelle Asante, Taqi Nazeer and Gary Beadle. Starting from May 20 until September 4, you will have the chance to go back in time more than 400 years ago. During 90 minutes, you will be able to step into this world and immerse yourself in it almost completely.

The immersive experience will be a seamless combination between digital stars and live actors, with multi-sensory effects that are all meant to create an accurate representation of London in 1605. Only this way can you truly experience how life was in the 17th century.

The Technology Behind the Experience

But how will everything be accomplished so accurately? Thanks to the technology available today, one can easily (re)create a world accurately, adding the most minor details to make it as authentic as possible. With the help of virtual reality headsets of the highest quality, special effects and mind-blowing technology like motion simulators and other aids that can generate physical sensation, from smell to touch, anyone who descends into the vaults will feel like they are part of the story.

Better said, they will feel as if they were transported in 1605 on November 5, when Guy Fawkes and other accomplices planned on blowing up the Parliament and King James I.

This has become widely known as The Gunpowder Plot, with Guy Fawkes being the conspirator who got caught in one of Parliament’s cellars, where around thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were found – enough to blow up the building. Robert Catesby, an English Catholic, was the one who organised the plot. He had one goal in mind: to end the government’s persecution of Catholics.

The Immersive Experience of the Most Audacious Conspiracy

So, once you are there, what will you experience precisely? What does an immersive experience look like, and more importantly, how will one of the most audacious conspiracies look and feel? Surely, it will be like no other, with live actors with whom you can interact if you want to.

Immersive experiences, by their name, allow visitors to become more than just mere spectators. They invite everyone to get as involved as they want, interact and become part of the play, story or, in this case, massive historical event. Live actors who take their roles seriously can talk with visitors and, if you want, you can interact with them as well. Depending on how involved you want to get and how much you want to be part of the story, you can simply greet them or discuss with them to discover exciting activities and quests you wouldn’t know of otherwise. As mentioned earlier, immersive experiences have the sole goal of getting people as part of the story as possible and creating a specific atmosphere perfectly to convey it accurately.

When it comes to The Gunpowder Plot immersive experience, this will not disappoint. In fact, it takes it one step further by combining digital elements with live ones. This way, you will be part of a multi-sensory all-encompassing, where you can interact with actors on the scene while also seeing an accurate representation of London in the 17th century, thanks to VR headsets and other special effects that will wake up all your five senses.

Apart from the fact that visitors will be able to immerse themselves in an environment where immersive theatre meets the latest technologies seamlessly to recreate the events of the 5th of November 1605, you can also be part of the conspiracy.

This means that you can be a co-conspirator alongside Guy Fawkes and be one of the accomplices involved. Doesn’t it sound utterly exciting? So, as a co-conspirator in the immersive experience taking place in the Tower of London, you will be able to take part in the following:

  • Not only will you be meeting the mysterious and infamous figures who put together one of the most daring plots, but you will also have the opportunity to be an accomplice yourself.
  • But keep in mind! If you want to become one of them, you must infiltrate the inner circle. This can only be done if you fulfil a mission.
  • As a co-conspirator, you will also have to attempt an Escape out of the Tower and uncover a safe house where you can hide.
  • Travel along the Thames to reach the Houses of Parliament.

These are some of the things you will experience during this 90-minute journey back in time when Guy Fawkes was found trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament. And thankfully, there is plenty of time if you want to immerse yourself in such a breath-taking experience, as The Gunpowder Plot experience will be running from May 20 until September 4 this year.

Tom Felton, the Harry Potter alumni, will be leading an extensive cast on this fascinating journey as he brings the famous – and infamous – character of Guy Fawkes to life. When asked about the role, the actor didn’t hold anything back. He is hugely excited about playing such a notorious and complex personality.
