A mugshot of a wanted woman named Ms Jocelyn Laird, 44 years of age, posted by Sydney Police on Facebook caught the attention of many but for unintended reasons. On Tuesday, Sydney Police uploaded a photograph of Ms Jocelyn Laird on the Facebook page of the Northern Beaches Police Area Command and other local pages in order to find her as she was on an outstanding warrant. However, the reaction of the public, especially the men, once again proved that men would be men. Soon after it was posted, the mugshot got bombarded with bizarre comments. Instead of helping the Police to locate her, men started praising her for her physical appearance, posting comments saying if she was wanted for stealing people’s hearts. One man also commented that the picture took his breath away. Such a reaction from the public was not what the authorities expected. It is indeed a lesson for everyone to understand that things do not always go the way we plan. The Police had to restrict the comment section soon after being hit with the same realisation.
But what was the crime that Ms Laird committed?
Ms Laird was charged with stealing $2000 from a person because of which the police were on her hunt. As per reports, she got released on bail on May 26, but she violated the bail conditions. As a result, police were trying to locate her, hence that Facebook post. Although the intentions of the cops went wrong, the lady was located the next day after her picture went viral. She was again arrested, and her case was presented in Waverley Local court. As per sources, this lady has given the police a tough time by not following the terms of bail. Moreover, even the decision of the police to post her picture was not taken positively by many. Many considered the post to be inappropriate, but the authorities denied it, saying that the post was needed.
Whatever be the case, one thing that this incident made clear is the careless and non-serious behaviour of the public in matters of urgency. Various comments that the post received simply abused the purpose for which it was uploaded in the first place. It was a clear case of spamming that interrupted the actions the cops were taking to find the woman. But one cannot do anything when it comes to digital spaces. They have their own pros and cons. While the police were unable to receive any significant comments, the tendency of the social media platforms to make things viral worked in their favour.
Although the post was created on the Facebook page, people soon started sharing it on different social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. From there, the news spread like fire, and the woman was traced the next day. However, she is yet to enter a plea.
It was also revealed that the woman used to take drugs and consume alcohol. As per court documents, she was asked to stop taking drugs and alcohol unless prescribed by the doctor. She was again released on bail and has been granted a surety of $500.
Despite whatever happened, the woman acquired a considerable “fan base” in no time. Men went gaga over her beauty, and it will undoubtedly remind you of other mugshots like this that might have gone viral previously.
A similar incident took place with an American man, Jeremy Meeks, who is now an international fashion model. A former gang member, Meeks, was put behind bars during a gang sweep in California in 2014. Just like Ms Laird, his mugshot was posted by police on Facebook, turning him into a “hot criminal” within seconds. Soon after his mugshot was posted, people, especially ladies, started looking for his Instagram profile. His Instagram handle observed an incredible rise in his followers, most of whom were women. At present, you will find his account to have over 1.6 million followers. Isn’t it insane? Well, that’s the power of going viral! But you have to decide what kind of content should be made viral according to the need of the hour.
Similarly, Jess Mabilia, a wanted man, went viral after his mugshot was posted on Facebook by Victoria Police. Within just an hour, the post received hundreds and thousands of comments from women across the globe. On a hilarious note, one woman desired her to wish to find the man on Tinder, a famous dating app before he was located by authorities. This comment gained over a thousand like within minutes, leaving people to laugh their hearts out. After reading this funny comment, some women might have even tried to locate him on Tinder. Well, the hotness of that guy was enough to make any woman go crazy. What do you think of this bizarre reaction of the public? Do you think it was justified? Read further to know our opinion on this.
Such incidents are kind of eye-openers. They reveal a lot about the psychology of people and how the human mind operates. Somewhere we all are impressed by good looks and charming personalities. Humans are so much attracted to outward appearances that they overlook the misdeeds that people do. All these so-called wanted people were desirable despite going against the laws. Why? Just because they were a treat for the eyes. But it certainly makes us question whether one can get away with any crime just because he or she is good-looking? Well, not at all! Your looks might make you famous overnight, but they cannot save you from your mishaps.
Therefore, it is crucial to react to such posts and matters of concern with caution. Your support can help police in carrying out their procedures smoothly. As responsible citizens, you should stop yourself from putting irrelevant comments on posts done for specific purposes. Instead, sharing such posts can help circulate the message to a larger population, resulting in effective rules and regulations.
