The coronation of King Charles III will take place on 6th May, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. It will take place in Westminster Abbey and, unlike one of his mother's, is expected to have fewer guests.
The ceremony would be shorter, and people will witness King Charles III wearing St. Edward's Crown at the end of it. St. Edward's crown was previously worn by the Queen in 1953, at the time of her coronation.
A day to remember- 6th May 2023
The King will also be honoured at Westminster Abbey, just like his mother. The ceremony will feature a number of illustrious witnesses, including members of parliament, religious figures, foreign heads of state, and peers.
Well, the exact official information of the ceremony is not yet out. But since the Archbishop of Canterbury specially organizes the event, excellence is predictable.
According to reports, the Gold State Coach, last used at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, will be used again this time.
Things that the coronation ceremony will involve
Going back to 1953, the crowning ceremony of the Queen occurred at 11:15 am on 2nd June. Millions of people came to London to witness the Royal couch along the mall then.
Owing to it, in 2023 also, the timings are assumed to be the same. Although the exact timings are not released, trusted sources have confirmed that it will likely be conducted in the daytime.
Like his parents, King Charles and his Queen consort, Camilla will also travel to Westminster Abbey, from Buckingham Palace. Here, they are supposed to board the Gold State Coach, especially taken out on the days of Jubilees and coronations.
Live display of the coronation ceremony.
Additionally, the coronation event will be streamed live on international television so that viewers may watch from the comfort of their homes. Despite this, between 2000 and 8000 attendees are expected to attend the wedding on average.
This time, though, the ceremony is just anticipated to last an hour and not three long hours like the Queen's. The ceremony will undoubtedly be shorter than the prior one while still adhering to state regulations.
You'll witness a change in conduct.
Unlike the previous ceremonies, where peers wore ceremonial robes and traditional outfits, the dress code was kept formal this time. Due to it, peers will be wearing suits and formal dresses.
Also, the previous presentation of gold nuggets will not be a part of the ceremony this time.
Research indicates that the coronation will be rooted in time-honored traditions and pomp, represent the monarch's function, and look to the future. Following this, after the ceremony ends, the King and the Queen consort will make an appearance through the balcony of Buckingham Palace, portraying the times when the Queen and Prince Philip did the same in 1953.
The six parts of the ceremony
The coronation ceremony takes place in six parts. First, they have the recognition, oath, anointing, inauguration, and enthronement and, finally, the homage.
During recognition, the monarch stands in the theatre at the centre and turns round in all four directions to himself to his people. Following this, he will be declared the “king" by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
At the time of the oath, the King will be seen promising to practise justice with mercy, rule according to law and maintain the decorum of the Church of England.
The King will be presented with the Sword of State when the oath is finished, and he will make the following vow at the altar: "I shall carry out and uphold the vows I made before here. So please God assist me," she said, kissing the oath book.
Coming to part three, they have anointed. In this, the monarch is blessed and consecrated with holy oil. Well, it is the main act of the religious ceremony and will require the King to pull off a robe of crimson color and sit on King Edward's chair.
After this, the inauguration of the official crowning takes place. Here the King will be dressed in Royal robes and presented with the coronating ring, orb, spectre and rod.
He will be crowned with St. Edward's crown while on his chair before the shout of the congregation.
The monarch will then be crowned, when archbishops, bishops, and "other people of the kingdom" will raise him onto a new throne.
The last part of the monarch's coronation is called homage.
In a show of reverence, the King's right hand will be kissed by the Prince of Wales, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and other princes with royal ancestry.
Coronation of Queen Camilla
The Queen will be crowned as well, following the king.
Previously, the partners of the kings were not a part of the coronation ceremonies. However, after Queen's Platinum Jubilee, she declared Camilla the Queen's consort and, thus, announced her coronation.
Is a bank holiday planned on that day?
When coronation ceremonies fall on weekdays, it is officially declared a bank holiday. This is mainly done to let people involve themselves in the coronation ceremony by gathering on the streets or watching it on TV.
Well in this coronation it is quite unsure to say what will happen exactly. The public holiday hasn't been officially announced by the palace, but reports claim that the business secretary, Jacob Rees-Mog, gave us a hint through his choice of words. Additionally, he said in an interview that a bank holiday is totally suitable. May typically has two bank holidays: one at the beginning and one at the end. Only five days following May's first bank holiday is the coronation ceremony.
The crowning of King Charles, however, took place on a Saturday, which is not a workday. Therefore, it has not yet been decided whether or not the next Monday or the Friday after that would be proclaimed official bank holidays.
