The recent eviction of escorts from properties in Soho London
Certain areas of capital cities are more prone to some of the older cultures and occupations that these metropolises are known for. And when it comes to occupations, they don’t come much older than prostitution or shall we say “escorting”. Soho is definitely a place that has strong connections to this trade and perhaps the city dwellers have become used to this existence over time. London escorts are definitely here in Soho, or at least for the time being.
Which is why it was a surprise when this demographic was served eviction notices by the powers that be in Soho not so long ago. 6 sex workers were then physically removed from their apartments by the Metropolitan Police as they closed down the attached premises where it was rumoured that these ladies plied their trade.
Local celebrities were quick to add support to their fellow locals who were now facing an uncertain future as homeless ladies.
Rupert Everett was amongst this number and along with a sizeable crowd, didn’t take long to make his feelings known outside the Soho Estates office buildings.
The facts are that whilst sex can be sold legally within Britain, the existence of brothels is another matter entirely. A brothel is defined as a building where more than one sex worker operates professionally.
It is ironic that the very buildings that are offering a safe place to both stay and operate from are being taken away from these professional ladies. And that is part of the reason why these Soho locals and their supporters are protesting so vehemently.
They believe that this is a ploy to simply turf out the tenants and sell these extremely valuable properties to developers. The MD of Soho Estates, John James, denied that this was the reason for the eviction but did note that the Metropolitan Police had informed them of the illegal operations that were being carried out on the rented premises.
Every major capital has an area that is referred to as a ‘Red Light’ district and Soho is probably amongst the most famous of these neighbourhoods, with more than its fair share of London escorts. Even Mr Everett was of the opinion that Soho and sex workers were integral to the character that makes our capital so colourful.
One of the sex workers, Bella Walker, considered Soho to be a relatively safe area for the world’s oldest profession to be carried out in this day and age. She argues that by evicting working ladies, the Metropolitan Police were removing the little power that they originally held.
Diversity is one of the attributes that bring tourists from all over the world to spend time in England’s bustling capital and London escorts are also an attraction of sorts. It seems that the more that places like Soho are diluted and transformed into somewhat faceless luxury apartments, the less interesting and original London will become. This theory was not lost on Niki Adams, the English Collective of Prostitutes representative, who echoed those sentiments.
She believes that her fellow sex workers portray an accurate representation of Soho and as she strode around the protest group wearing a fetching feather boa with a pink mini-skirt, who could argue with her?
